Shinpei Naito
River Side 2007
“His fantasy is boundless and utterly unique,” is how designer Shinpei Naito, who was born in 1977 in Tokyo, describes himself. His fantastical, animal-like creatures, which he endows with biometric characteristics, unique behavioural patterns and their own specific biosphere on a map, reveal Shinpei Naito’s passion for the world of science fiction and his obsession with detail. His inspiration and motivation come from the work of the American designer Syd Mead, who played a decisive role in creating the strange, futuristic worlds of many recent science fiction films, including Tron, Blade Runner and Alien. After studying at a private art college in Japan, Shinpei Naito moved to Berlin and began designing and making bags under his SN-Future label. His colourful, energetic designs can now be found on a wide range of fashion items, such as clothes, mobile phones, snowboards and the turntables of several big-name audio manufacturers.
