onformative, founded by Julia Laub and Cedric Kiefer in Berlin, is a studio specialised in generative design solutions covering various types of media, ranging from classic book design to experimental visualisation of information.
For their Montblanc artwork, the duo found inspiration in the contrasts and complexities of watches themselves – how they are, by definition, machines - yet refined, ever-moving, subtle and elegant ones.
Laub and Kiefer translated the dualities and intricacies of watches into their generative works. The precious metal cases could be steely grey bodies of water, finding their forms as they shelter the fine, delicate internal organs of the timepieces.
The artists’ interpretations of the fluid ebb and flow of water, the sheen of protective metal, come to life in their pieces of generative art, reflecting the life force a timepiece adopts the moment it begins to track time.
