Michel Majerus

Luxembourg artist Michel Majerus (1967–2002)
achieved significant international attention for the
first time in the second half of the 1990s with his vital,
colorful, large-format paintings in which he
combined visual impressions of our fast-paced everyday
culture with citations of recent developments
in art history. In his works, well-known computer
game or TV characters, pictorial elements from the
music scene, comic art or advertising meet motifs
and forms of expression from pop art or minimalism.
In this way, Majerus, who lived in Berlin after his studies
at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts, examined
the works of Frank Stella, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy
Warhol, Willem de Kooning and James Rosenquist
among others. In this process, the images cited in
Majerus’ works overlay into dynamic structures
that can be compared with the musical sampling
technique. After Majerus’ tragic accidental death
in 2002 his paintings and installations were shown
in a series of retrospective exhibitions in Hamburg,
Hanover, Graz, Amsterdam and Luxembourg, as
well as most recently in Stuttgart.
