About the Cooperation

A milestone in our commitment to art was in 1997 when we began our collaboration with the Gallery of Contemporary Art of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Though we have long identified ourselves as an international luxury brand, our connection to Hamburg, as the city where our company was founded and where our headquarters are still located, has always been strong. We are involved in the city’s cultural projects, we support local initiatives and we have created the Montblanc Culture Card to enable all interested Montblanc colleagues and staff to enjoy price advantages at the Gallery of Contemporary Art of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, premieres at the Thalia Theatre and the Hamburg State Opera, as well as concerts by the Philharmonia of the Nations.

Over the past 15 years, as part of our collaboration with the Hamburger Kunsthalle, we have jointly selected a work reflecting Montblanc’s philosophy of time by a different contemporary artist every two years. The selected work is purchased and then publicly exhibited for two years at the Montblanc Gallery, located on our premises and built in the architectural style of the atrium of the Gallery of Contemporary Art. Here it can be viewed by our employees and the public alike. At the end of two years the work is transferred on a 99-year loan to the Gallery of Contemporary Art of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. As a result the Gallery of Contemporary Art now has access to impressive works by Stephan Huber, Jorge Pardo, Thomas Schütte, Daniel Richter, Sylvie Fleury, Thomas Demand and Marcel van Eeden. We are happy to have been able to add such extraordinary works to the museum’s collection, at the same time making them accessible to the general public. This project, as well as discussions with museum representatives and the artists themselves, provided the impetus for our own collection of commissioned works, the Montblanc Cutting Edge Art Collection. Some time would pass, however, before the Collection was first presented to the public in 2002.
