Wang Guangyi

The Chinese painter and sculptor Wang Guangyi (b. 1957) is considered a leading representative of the so-called political pop artistic current in China. In his large-format paintings and printing graphics, he uses the motifs and aesthetics of communist propaganda art from the period of the Chinese Cultural Revolution and combines them with the American pop art manner of expression. By inserting brand names and logos of Western consumer goods, the artist, who lives in Beijing, generates a clash of communism and capitalism. Thus, in his series of works entitled “Great Criticism”, which Wang Guangyi has been developing since the 1990s, Chinese proletarians and armed revolutionaries are seen under the logos and signatures of Montblanc, Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Coca-Cola. In this way, Wang Guangyi, who graduated from the Zhejiang Art Academy in 1984, questions the value system of antithetical societal structures, casting a critical light on the consequences of China opening up to the global market.
