In 2002, Montblanc set up the Young Directors Project as part of the Salzburg Festival. The three young directors Igor Bauersima from Switzerland, Frédéric Fishbach from France and Oskaras Korsunovas from Lithuania were invited to present their work to the broad audience of the Salzburg Festival.

At the first Young Directors Cut, the jury, including Dr. Helga Rabl-Stadler, “Jedermann” Peter Simonischek and gallerist Thaddaeus Ropac, recognized the productions of all three directors equally. The three winners therefore shared the prize money of €10,000. Frederic Fishbach received the exclusive award trophy, the Max Reinhard Writing Instrument, for his radical approach and his elaborate realization of his piece.
