In 2009, the Young Directors Project presented four productions that focused on the relationship between proximity and distance – in both a geographical and personal sense. All performances were given in the original language with English or German subtitles, thus addressing the very diverse public. This time, the Young Directors Project was enriched with an international flavor with productions from the USA, the Netherlands, Hungary and Germany. The productions included WELCOME TO NOWHERE, director and text: Kenneth Collins from the USA; from Hungary/Austria, ALICE, based on Lewis Carroll as part of an adaptation by Roland Schimmelpfennig from director Viktor Bodó; and the German play DIE WELT IST GROß UND RETTUNG LAUERT ÜBERALL (THE WORLD IS BIG AND RESCUE LURKS EVERYWHERE) by Ilija Trojanow and director Jette Steckel. The Netherlands presented the play YOU ARE HERE from director Dries Verhoeve, who, at the end, won the Montblanc Young Directors Award 2009.
The jury included Dr. Helga Rabl-Stadler (president of the Salzburg Festival), Thaddaeus Ropac (Ropac Gallery), Peter Simonischek (actor), Wolfgang Kralicek (culture critic) and Sunnyi Melles (actress).
