“It was one of those weeks again. On Monday and Tuesday, the days were so full it was hard to fit in slots for breakfast and dinner. Who needs lunch anyway? But Wednesday and Thursday looked to be the tightest days in the week: My business’s demands called for a two-day trip to some of my most important partners. And while the trip itself would be short, the days promised to be long and eventful.First on the agenda were two meetings in London – a presentation and a dinner appointment with another client. The morning after, I would have to get up early to catch a flight to Brussels where we would finally sign the contract with a new client after months of negotiations.

That’s manageable, you think? I thought so as well, so I called my old friend Tom, who put down roots in Brussels a while ago, and asked if he had time for lunch. Of course, I could have left out that last, personal part out to catch an earlier plane home, but where’s the fun in that?

I want to be able to find joy in my occupation until I’m old – and the best way to achieve that is to mix business with just the right amount of pleasure. So, there I was, the night before the flight, with an empty trolley in front of me. It had the size of cabin luggage because I prefer to move fast and stay flexible, but its limited size also called for good planning.First the attire: For the presentation, I packed a suit, a formal shirt and a tie made of the finest material – but nothing too extravagant. After all, the meeting should be more about my ideas than my person. Dinner would be different: Since I knew my client loves to go out to extraordinary places, I went for a dinner suit and added a pair of cuff links for an elegant twist. For the contract deal on the following day, my business suit would be appropriate as well, so I could save space here and only add a fresh shirt. Call me superstitious, but I also packed another tie that would fit the special occasion of the signing and would hopefully bring me luck.

A pair of fine leather shoes and a fitting belt completed the package and then there was Tom. How can a meeting of old friends be casual and relaxed if one of them turns up in his business armour? So a pair of nice, comfortable shoes and a casual shirt found their way into my trolley, as well as essentials like my wash bag and razor. When I had finished packing, I realised there was still some space left. Just enough for a book or two. But as Einstein said, time and space are relative. And there was no way I would have time for reading. So I left my library at home and went well prepared on an intense but successful trip: The presentation went great, the dinner was delicious, the deal was signed and Tom is the same great friend he always was. And at the airport, I still found time to fill the empty space in my luggage with a personal gift for my nephew.”
