Baron Max von Oppenheim's life was filled with a passion for exploring and discovery, for beauty and the fascination of the Middle East. To honour a man who roamed from Europe to the East the design of the Limited Edition Max von Oppenheim is inspired by the domes of Eastern mosques. Pale grey lacquer inlays on the barrel, made of 925 sterling silver, are reminiscent to the decoration and frescoes of the Middle East while the fountain pen's gold-plated rings recall the famous designs and reliefs from Tell Halaf.

Baron Max von Oppenheim was born on 15th June 1860 in Cologne into a wealthy and influential banking dynasty. After reading “Tales from the Arabian Nights”, he developed a passionate desire to travel in the East. His love of the Eastern world and desire to explore it, led him to enter the service of the foreign office in 1896 and he was sent to Cairo as a diplomat. In 1899, Oppenheim left on a seven-month journey to the Middle East which he saw as the culmination of his archaeological career.

He carried out excavations at the ancient settlement of Tell Halaf in northern Syria, which produced extensive finds from the prehistoric Halaf culture and the Assyrian empire. Baron Max von Oppenheim died in 1946 in Landshut, Bavaria, and is today considered to be one of Germany’s leading explorers of the East, bringing to light a civilisation which many had believed lost forever.
