The Event:
The 2009 German Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award was presented on 3 June in the “Ballsaal” of the Hotel de Rome in Berlin. German honouree Liz Mohn was honoured for her extraordinary engagement as chairwoman and creative driving force behind the Bertelsmann Foundation.

Besides the presentation of the Montblanc Patron of Art “Max von Oppenheim” limited edition, Liz Mohn received the prize money of €15,000 with which she would further support “Neue Stimmen”, an international singing competition, founded by Ms Mohn in 1987, that encourages young opera singers.

Liz Mohn, as well as the other honourees of this year's award, received a further $15,000. This amount was generated from sales of Lang Lang’s Chopin album – an initiative driven by Lang Lang as the new chairman of the Montblanc Foundation. The Foundation donated two US Dollars for every CD sold.

Over one hundred invited guests, among them laudator Prof. Justus Frantz, Minu Barati-Fischer, Thomas Heinze, Jette Joop, Sonja Kirchberger, Franziska Knuppe, Vicky Leandros, Sunnyi Melles, Verona Pooth, former minister Otto Schily and Udo Walz, enjoyed the award ceremony, which was moderated by German TV presenter Frauke Ludowig.

The highlight of the ceremony was the surprise act of three opera singers supported by the “Liz Mohn Kultur- und Musikstiftung". Viktor Rud, Evelin Novak, Paul O’Neill, and star pianist Manuel Lange provided a beautiful musical setting, worthy of the festive occasion. At the end of the ceremony, tenor Tobey Wilson surprised Liz Mohn with his performance. The guests enjoyed the delicious buffet from the Hotel de Rome and were generously shuttled by the exclusive BMW limousine service.
