Great artists throughout history have expressed the human experience in a universal language of form and beauty. The Montblanc Masters of Art Collection honours their immortal contribution to the quest for perfection in art – a quest Montblanc both celebrates and participates in. One artist whose vision helped shape Viennese Art Nouveau and the Golden Age is Gustav Klimt. The Montblanc Masters of Art Homage to Gustav Klimt Limited Edition 888 celebrates his active commitment to the Vienna Secession and features design highlights from his Beethoven Frieze – the large format masterpiece of his ‘Golden Phase’ that he created for the Secession building. The relief-like solid Au 750 yellow gold overlay on the platinum-coated cap, with its spirals and vertical lines symbolising the strings of a lyre, refers to the golden ornamentation of the Beethoven Frieze as well as its lyre-playing figure of poetry, whose sounds are said to quench humanity's longing for happiness. Two-dimensional lines inspired by the façade reliefs of the Secession building shine against the matt background of the platinum-coated cap and barrel. The combination of solid Au 750 yellow gold and platinum-coated elements on the cap and barrel echo the experimental and luxurious materials typical of Gustav Klimt. The interplay is enriched by a malachite cabochon in the cone. The green colour of malachite evokes spring, the season of new beginnings. In recognition of Klimt's achievements for the Vienna Secession, the solid Au 750 gold inlay on the barrel bears his Secession monogram with the initials GK. The clip of the Homage to Gustav Klimt Limited Edition 888 is specially designed with reference to Gustav Klimt’s Pallas Athene. Since Athena is the goddess of both warfare and the arts, she is depicted launching the struggle for artistic freedom. The slightly curved lines ending in three spirals on the partly platinum-coated, partly yellow gold-coated clip of the Limited Edition 888 correspond to the decoration on the forged metal frame. The handcrafted solid Au 750 yellow gold nib of the Homage to Gustav Klimt Limited Edition 888 is adorned with finely engraved graphic elements that form the typical geometric language seen in many of Gustav Klimt's works.
