With his substantial oeuvre consisting of architectural sculptures, figurative forms, installations, drawings, watercolours, etchings, photographs and video works, Schütte, who was born in Oldenburg in 1954, attained a significant international ranking. In contrast to his works on paper, which are primarily distinguished by a light-hearted, spontaneous image language in which the artist, who lives in Düsseldorf, ironically and upsettingly comments on the art industry, politics and everyday life, his sculptures are more particularly inspired by timeless topics: his monumental female figures are symbols of sensuality, constancy and the power of creation. “Frau Nr. 9” [“Woman No. 9”], which was purchased by the Montblanc Cultural Foundation in 2003 and transferred to the Gallery of Contemporary Art of the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 2004, emphasises female fertility and the immortality of the human species. By making reference to the sculptures of Rodin and Maillol, Schütte utilises the material language of bronze and steel as well as their sensitivity to the elements in order to emphasise both timelessness and time dependency.
