Your writing instrument is crafted from materials of very high quality. For some editions, natural substances such as precious stones (e.g. diamonds, sapphires or rubies), natural stones (e.g. jade, turquoise or jasper) or natural materials (e.g. mother-of-pearl, wood or mammoth ivory) have been used, giving each piece a special character and necessitating particular caution during use. To guard against damage or breakage, it is advisable to handle the creation with care. Please protect it from moisture, heat, sunlight, shock and impact to ensure continued enjoyment for many years to come. If any ink should come into contact with a wooden or stone surface, please clean it immediately with a damp, lint-free cloth to prevent possible natural reactions with the material.
Always use a lint-free, damp cloth and avoid harmful
substances and all contact with corrosive or solvent containing cleaning agents and chemicals. Depending on material, please use a suitable cleaning cloth. We strongly recommend that the cap is not attached to the rear end of the cone as this may damage your writing instrument. The design of some editions does not allow attaching the cap at all.
We recommend keeping your Montblanc writing instrument in a Montblanc pouch for protection. Storing your writing instrument in a pen pouch will help protect it from dirt, scratches and wear. Please store your writing instrument at room temperature and normal atmospheric humidity. When not using your Montblanc writing instrument for an extended period of time, it is advisable to remove all ink from the fountain pen and clean it with water with no additives.
To maintain the best condition of your fountain pen, Montblanc recommends cleaning the writing instrument once every three months. This is especially important if the ink has dried out, if the ink flow has become irregular, or if you want to use a different colour ink.
For more information on your Montblanc creation, warranty and care recommendations, please view or download a pdf copy of our Service Guide.
The Ballpoint pen uses ink paste and one can use a certain amount of pressure while writing. Therefore ballpoint pens are perfect for filling forms with multiple pages and for writers who write a lot. Our ballpoint pens have a twist mechanism (except the Montblanc Heritage Egyptomania and Baby Ballpoint pens), which protrudes and retracts the refill.
The Rollerball uses liquid ink, similar to fountain pen ink. The majority of our Rollerballs have a cap, which you need to take off before writing. Closing the cap ensures that the ink does not dry up. There are only a few which do not have a cap, e.g. the Rollerball Capless which uses the special "capless refill".
Fineliner uses liquid ink, similar to fountain pen ink and have a felt tip.
Most Montblanc fountain pen models have a piston filling system which means that they can be filled from an ink bottle. This refers to the majority of larger writing instruments like Le Grand or Meisterstück 149, our Special Edition and Limited Edition writing instruments. The Meisterstück Classique and the Starwalker fountain pens can be used with ink cartridges or filled from an ink bottle by using the included ink converter.
The fountain pen of the Muses collection can only be used with catridges.
Montblanc fountain pens should be used exclusively with original Montblanc fountain pen ink or Montblanc ink cartridges. Montblanc ink has been perfectly designed to match the features of our fountain pens. Any malfunction or damage caused by the use of components other that those recommended by Montblanc are not covered by our warranty.
If you need more advice on whether you could use your writing instrument with ink or ink cartridges, do not hesitate to contact us. (LINK: https://www.montblanc.com/customer-service/contact-us )
Mechanical pencils are used with lead refills of different sizes depending on the model and are available in Meisterstück Classique size (0.7mm 0.5mm lead) and Writers Editions.

Some of Montblanc refills and inks are document-proof which means that their colour does not change even after a long period of time. The ink used in these refills and inks is a high quality iso-certified (14145-2) permanent ink that is resistant against bleaching, water and light.
If you use permanent ink, depending on the paper, it may take a little longer until the writing is dried completely. We recommend to clean the fountain pen more frequently (every 2 to 3 weeks). Ideally, the fountain pen should be used several times a week and rinsed after use.
If this time is significantly exceeded, it may be that pigments have permanently settled in the feeder and can no longer be removed by normal rinsing. In that case, a thorough inspection of the fountain pen at the Service Centre would be necessary.
The permanent inks and refills are: Permanent Black ink, Permanent Blue ink as well as ballpoint pen refills in Mystery Black, Royal Blue, Modena Red and Irish Green.
The nib is the heart of every Montblanc fountain pen. It is the nib that gives handwriting its style and unmistakable character. How a writer holds his pen is as individual as his personality. Choosing the right nib to match your personal writing style will allow you to write effortlessly. To offer the perfect nib for each individual handwriting style, Montblanc offers an exclusive selection of eight different nib widths.
EF (Extra Fine) , F (Fine) , M (Medium)
The basic feature is the round tip which is suitable for almost all writing styles, even with high hand rotation, for fountain pen beginners and left-handers.
B (Broad), BB (Double Broad)
The basic feature is the straight tip which is suitable for writers with little hand rotation. These nib widths create a particular impressive writing with a variating width of the line. The straight nibs have to be put on the paper in a straight position in accordance with the shape of the tip.
OM (Oblique Medium), OB (Oblique Broad) , OBB (Oblique Double Broad), (with 149 only: OBBB , Oblique Triple Broad).
The basic feature is the straight oblique (=slanted) tip which is suitable for people who write with a slanted angle. The oblique nibs have to be put on the paper in a slanted position in accordance with the shape of the tip.
For even more possibilities of expressing your personal style Montblanc
offers Bespoke Nib Service as well as writing instruments with calligraphy nibs, flexible and curved nibs.
The main and visible difference between the Curved nib and the Flexible nib is the way the tip is designed. The curved nib tip is ground at a 45° angle and is therefore particularly suited for intricate Chinese, Japanese and Korean calligraphy as well as for sketching and drawing designs.
Depending on the angle of the curved nib on the paper, the calligrapher can achieve wide horizontal lines and thin vertical lined while also turning the nib upside down for a very fine line suited for detailed drawing.
The Flexible nib is as the name indicates, made of a more flexible gold material. The variations in the line width and hues of colour are achieved by exerting more or less pressure while writing. This development is based on the very successful Montblanc Meisterstück fountain pens of the 1950s.
