MONTBLANC WRITERS EDITION

The Montblanc Writers Edition Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson Limited Edition pays tribute to the life and work of an imaginative storyteller. Stevenson became world-famous as an author of classic adventure literature, most notably the gripping novel "Treasure Island" and the thriller "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde." Stevenson, who was a celebrity during his lifetime, spent several years searching for a place that was conducive to his health and eventually settled in Samoa.

THE STORY

This collection of limited-edition writing instruments honours the unique legacy of writer Robert Louis Stevenson, essayist, poet, travel writer, and iconic novelist.

Stevenson helped to shape not one, but two genres of fiction. Firstly, with his classic novel “Treasure Island”, his wild imagination gave readers their first real taste of adventure fiction. Then, not three years later, he ventured into gothic fiction with “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, a book that defines the genre for many.
Still widely read and constantly adapted for stage and screen, his work remains a cornerstore of literature.

  • 1883’s Treasure Island might have told of the high seas and tropical new lands, but it’s inspiration was rather different. Trying to entertain his stepson during a holiday in the tiny Scottish village of Braemar, the pair spent an afternoon drawing a map together of an imaginary far away island filled with adventure…
  • The map that would inspire the novel was no mere scribble to pass the time on a rainy afternoon. It depicted a rugged, unconquered world named Treasure Island, with the hills and bays, water depths, latitude and longitude all named as well as a compass rose to determine its location. As for the treasure that would draw Stevenson’s hero Jim Hawkins away from his life in Bristol and on an adventure to find the treasure hidden by the infamous pirate Captain Flint, those were marked with a large cross. From here, Stevenson built out his world and millions of readers have followed him there. As for the treasure that would draw Stevenson’s hero Jim Hawkins away from his life in Bristol and on an adventure to find the treasure hidden by the infamous pirate Captain Flint, its site was marked with a large cross. This was the starting point from which Stevenson created his fictional world and millions of readers have since followed him there.
  • In 1886, Stevenson’s ambition and desire to break new ground saw him abandon sunny climbs and sharp cutlasses to produce The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The novella tells the story of the Dr Henry Jekyll, an honourable doctor, dedicated to his patients, who hides a terrible dark secret. At night, he transforms himself with a home-brewed potion into the diabolical, murderous Mr Hyde, a brutal killer who spreads fear and terror through the streets of London. The novel is one of the defining books of the gothic genre, and for its origins, Stevenson looked deep within, He described his own duality in a letter with the words ‘I have called the one person myself, and the other the other fellow’. It was an inner darkness never seen on the page before and one that still sends chills with every read.
  • Stevenson’s travels were not just confined to the pages of his books. Driven by a lifelong desire for freedom and for immersion in another world, despite several bouts of ill health, he travelled widely across North America and Australasia. Most notably was his adventures in Samoa, where he spent the final years of his life, and became so immersed in the culture of the island that the local inhabitants named him ‘Tusitala’. It’s meaning could not be more fitting: Teller of stories.

Limited Edition

The shape of the writing instrument is such that it is reminiscent of an old-fashioned extendable spyglass that evokes Stevenson's adventurous maritime and pirate stories
The duality of human nature described in Stevenson’s works is symbolized in the Writers Edition by an engraving of the line “Under the wide and starry sky”, written in mirror writing on the platinum-coated cap top ring. This is the first line of Stevenson’s poem ‘Requiem’, immortalized on his tomb.
Vertical lines that bring to mind the planks of the schooner Hispaniola and a traditional sea chest adorn the cap of the Writers Edition. The cap ring features a reproduction of the author´s signature as well as ‘1866’ – the year of Stevenson´s first (privately printed) publication: The Pentland Rising: A Page of History, 1666. Stevenson's life dates (1850 - 1894) are engraved on the back of the cap.
Referencing Robert Louis Stevenson’s passion for seafaring and his decision to settle in the South Seas, the handcrafted, rhodium-coated, solid Au 750 gold nib is engraved with fine wave-like lines and the title given by the Samoans to the great writer and world traveler: ‘Tusitala’ - which translates as ‘teller of stories’.
