In homage to Japan’s rich cultural heritage, this edition celebrates the iconic Kinkaku-ji “Golden Pavilion” temple in Kyoto. The depiction of the temple and its gardens is brought to life through the masterful technique of Maki-e, the "art of the golden brush stroke" – a complex artisanal process in which powdered gold is skillfully hand-applied to a lacquered surface. The bronze phoenix that sits on the top of the temple’s roof is captured in an intricate laser engraving on the forepart, embodying divine favor, virtue, and harmony.
The deep blue and gold hues of this instrument evoke the tranquility of the Japanese Zen garden, enriched by an array of flora and fauna. The hexagonal-patterned skeleton overlay features a koi carp gliding alongside an intricate chrysanthemum, long associated with longevity and imperial grace. A delicate dragonfly crowns the cap top, representing good fortune and unwavering resolve.
This edition embodies enduring traditions through meaningful symbols. The vibrant vermilion red, believed to protect against evil spirits, contrasts with the elegant gold-coated fittings and black resin on the cone and forepart ring. The cap is defined by a black lacquer-filled engraving of a crane; its wings outstretched as it rises and circles its partner in a testament to nature’s grace and enduring love.
The limitation of 1,994 pieces is a nod to the year 1994, when a group of Kyoto’s significant historic sites were collectively designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
